Highlights from Meeting held on 14 March 2011

Anyone interested in helping the club in any way is encouraged to come along to a Scottish Canoe Workshop to be held in Thurso on Sunday 10 April, times and venue to be announced.

A ‘fun day’  to introduce  beginners to open water paddling, as well as for all others in the club, will be held on Sunday May 8th. The venue will be decided on the day, depending on the weather, and may be Loch Watten, Loch Toftingall, Portskerra or possibly elsewhere.

An outdoor  briefing session for beginners will be held at the club hut on Thursday April 28 at 6-30pm. Outdoor sessions at the club hut then begin on Thursday 5 May for experienced paddlers and Thursday 12 May for beginners. Beginners’ sessions will be fortnightly from then on. Some of the sessions for experienced paddlers might be held at other venues. There will also be ‘open canoe nights’.  The cost of these evenings will be £5-00 for those using club equipment and £1-00 for those with their own equipment.

Club boats and equipment can be hired to club members, however this is conditional on individuals agreeing to use the equipment only in conditions appropriate to their level of experience, and  agreeing to re-imburse the club for loss or damage.

Subject to confirmation, there will be a children's 'come and try it' session in the pool from 7-8pm on Thursday 21 April, when the new open canoes ( as well as some of the pool boats) will be available.

There is less money available from the Sports Council to fund those wishing to attend coaching and training courses. Interested individuals are to be encouraged to approach other sources of funding such as the Scottish Canoe Association, Coaching Highland, or to make use of Individual Learning Accounts.

There will be a 2-star sea assessment and a 3-star sea assessment on dates to be announced in the Summer.

It is planned to produce a provisional programme of Summer trips at weekends or on Thursday nights. Mark Cleminson has offered to host a planning evening for those interested on Wednesday 20 April.  All experienced paddlers are encouraged to come.  Further details to follow.
